AREA 1: Downtown Puerto Iguazú

The area marked in RED is the downtown core, where you’ll find the San Martín Plaza (the main square), the Cathedral, souvenir and clothing shops, and the famous Avenida Brasil — home to pubs, bars, ice cream shops, and many local dining spots.

This area is perfect if you’re looking for walkability, restaurants, and public transport access.

Pros:

  • Close to the main bus terminal
  • Bars, shops, and nightlife
  • Quick access to tours and excursions

If you choose a hotel in this area or nearby, getting around won’t be an issue. The main bus terminal is right there, offering routes to all the top tourist attractions, including the Argentinian Iguazu Falls, the Brazilian Falls, La Aripuca, the Three Borders Landmark, the Güira Oga Wildlife Refuge, and even buses to the airport.

Keep in mind that downtown areas are generally livelier — so some places may be a bit noisy, although not all.

This might sound obvious, but when searching for a place to stay online, always check the most recent guest reviews before booking.

“Sometimes you end up paying for the location, not for the actual quality of the service.”

Of course, that’s not always the case. You can find many great places with fair prices — just make sure to read what other travelers say.

AREA 2: Residential Neighborhoods of Puerto Iguazú

The area marked in GREEN shows the city’s residential neighborhoods. One important road is Avenida República Argentina, one of the main arteries of the city where local buses pass through — connecting to the bus terminal and the Three Borders Landmark.

Pros:

  • House-style accommodations with kitchens and patios
  • Quieter, more private surroundings
  • Local shops, pharmacies, and markets nearby

These are older, peaceful neighborhoods. You’ll find everything from pharmacies and ATMs to small eateries, vegetable stands, and convenience stores with local prices (not tourist rates). Many of the accommodations are family-run.

It’s a great option for families or long-term stays — you can enjoy the comfort of a home, a fair price, and a relaxed local vibe.

Reading guest reviews is always a smart move before booking your stay.

Once you’ve booked, it’s a good idea to contact the host in advance to coordinate check-in and key handover.

Puerto Iguazú is not a large city, so even from the neighborhoods, you can walk to downtown in about 15 to 20 minutes — even less if you’re driving.

AREA 3: Farm Area / Km 5

The zone marked in BLUE is the farm-style or Km 5 area — a quiet, green region located near the city entrance along Route 12.

Pros:

  • Close to Aripuca, Güira Oga, and the Ice Bar
  • Cabins surrounded by nature
  • Buses available to downtown and the Falls

Cons: Fewer shops and restaurants nearby.

In this area you’ll find Güira Oga Wildlife Refuge, La Aripuca, the Ice Bar, Cultura Park Iguazú and other tourist attractions. There are also several important hotels along Route 12, as well as cozy cabins, apartments, and many family-run accommodations.

Buses running along Route 12 go to the Argentinian Iguazu Falls, and local buses connect this area to the Three Borders Landmark.

It’s a bit farther from downtown, and shopping options are limited — but it’s a peaceful option for those looking to unwind close to nature.

AREA 4: 600 Hectares / Iryapú Forest

The PINK area is known as the 600 Hectares or Iryapú Jungle, where you’ll find renowned hotels like Hilton, Loi Suites, Awasi, Mercure, and more — all luxury 5-star accommodations.

Luxury and nature in perfect harmony.

Ideal for: Romantic getaways and couples’ retreats.

Pros:

  • 5-star hotels immersed in the jungle
  • Nature trails, bike rentals, and reserves
  • Close to Guaraní villages for cultural visits

Cons: Only accessible by car or taxi — no public buses reach this area.

The only downside is that there are no public buses and downtown is nearly an hour away on foot. You’ll need a car or taxi to get around comfortably.

Besides the luxury jungle hotels, you’ll also find indigenous Guaraní communities offering cultural tours and artisan markets.

The paved roads of the 600 Hectares zone are perfect for daytime walking or cycling tours. Just note that there are some steep hills — we recommend going with a companion, not alone.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to stay right next to the terminal to have a great experience. Some places charge a premium just for the location but fail to deliver quality service. Choose wisely!

Iguazú is compact. Walking from most neighborhoods to downtown takes about 15–20 minutes.

Whether you’re walking or driving, downtown or residential areas — Iguazú is a peaceful city. Crime is minimal, but like anywhere else, it’s good to take normal precautions.

All buses (except long-distance) run along Avenida Victoria Aguirre, the main road connecting Route 12 to the Three Borders Landmark, passing through downtown.
